Black Panther - Overthoughts

Monday Feb 19, 2018

Monday Feb 19, 2018

In today's TOGI-esque Overthougts ep, Corrigan hosts an episode talking all about your new favorite movie: Black Panther! She covers the history of the comic, talks about some of the social and cultural impacts of the character, and of course dives into the film with the help of a few guests...
0:00 - Which came first: the Black Panther Party or the Black Panther comic? The answer might surprise you as Kyo pulls out the first three Black Panther comics and gives a history of the character in Marvel Comics, including the original Jungle Action stories and the controversial Black Panther vs. the KKK arc.
10:55 - Why Black Panther is so unique and important; the architecture of Wakanda, representation of blackness to be proud of, and the idea of an Africa that does not need saving; why African countries are not just "shithole countries," and the realities of Africa's advancements.
19:00 How Black Panther addresses refugees and global responsibility; how it reflects questions in diasporic African communities, particularly in America, and why that means some elements of the movie are FOR the black audience.
28:00 New Orleans native and Black Panther fangirl Chelsea St. Juniors talks about the importance of black representation to her and in general; looking at Wakanda as untouched by colonialism and European politicking, and the idea that this is what Africa might be like without colonization; the significance of the Dora Milaje and strong women; potential for lgbtqia+ representation in the next film; the theater-going experience with black people.
35:20 The humor of the movie, the brilliance of the casting, and why you should probably see Black Panther at least three times.
Many thanks to Chelsea for sending us her thoughts! Find her on Twitter: @ifiweremagneto

We didn't want to leave our other sister show out of the fun, so we're bringing you another crossover episode from The Overthink Podcast Network catalog!
West Coast Bias is a show centered around sports (you guessed it) on the West Coast! Instead of the usual hot-taking sport talk radio however, WCB brings you stat-driven, research-laden conversations between Brent, Sean, Chad, and Ben. If you enjoy sports, you'll probably dig their weekly convos. For more info on them and their podcast, check out www.westcoastbiaspod.com. Thanks for listening!

In our first ever crossover episode, we're featuring another member of The Overthink Podcast, Men Of Low Moral Fiber. They're a podcast about retro video games, specifically those related to the LucasArts gaming company. They cover a different game every month, and this is their 23rd game, so check them out if you're at all interested in old PC and console gaming. Enjoy!
------------
We’re back after a month off to bring you all one of the highest-acclaimed LucasArts games ever: Grim Fandango. Somehow this slipped through our fingers in our youth, so we were happy to give it a shot and it did not disappoint! Friend of the podcast, Nick Bontrager joins the boys as Grim is one of his all-time favorites. Thanks again for joining us, man!
After some intro talk, we get into the making-of Grim Fandango at 9:30 in, then dive deeper into the gameplay at 31:30. Of course, we throw in a few rounds of “What’s The Beer? What’s The Song?” at 45:30, and pick next month’s game at the 1-hour mark. Oh man. It’s a doozy! And it’s a console game too! Get psyched, man!

We love movies here at The Overthink, so we figured we'd get down to the basics and ask a few of our hosts to sit down and talk about how they do just that. So here's a conversation between Ben and Jorge about how they watch movies, including how they approach pre-release information, how they choose what to watch and where, and what their mindset is while watching.
This is by no means intended as a guide, much less a prescription for how everyone should approach film watching, but more so a way to start a conversation to encourage sharing and learning from each other. Hope you enjoy it!
The rundown:
[02:20] How do we choose what films to see?
[08:15] What do we do with trailers?
[12:00] What about film reviews?
[18:00] How do we prefer to see a film?
[23:00] Do all 3D movies suck eggs?
[33:00] Moviegoing pet peeves
[45:00] Stay for ALL the credits?
[51:15] What's our mindset while watching?
[58:15] BIGATURES!!! I mean... Special features?
[64:00] How many times do we re-watch films?
[69:00] What's the deal with award shows?
